The week between 3rd-9th June was Scout Community Week. A week where over 3000 Scout groups all over the U.K. came together to help their community in one week. Every night during the week, we were out picking up litter to help make our community a tidier place.

It all started on the Monday evening with the Mayor coming to kick start us off. She was very impressed to see what we were going to be up for the rest of the week before the Cubs headed off into the Holywell Estate to search for rubbish.

Tuesday night saw our Scouts out and about making their way from The Holt back up to the headquarters. Wednesday Scouts did their turn on Lodge Farm playing fields.

Leicestershire County Councillor Peter Lewis came to visit our Cubs on Thursday night who said it was great that our young people were looking after our community, espcially since we won Britain in Bloom competition. They then headed off around to Woodbrook Vale. The prize goes to them for collecting the most rubbish!

Finally it was the turn of Friday Beavers. With a visit from Jonathan Morgan, our local borough councillor, and Nicky Morgan, our MP, who helped our Beavers doing their litter pick before having a awkward Question and Answer session.

Along with other Scout Groups that took part, it is estimated that together we collected 800 tonnes of litter. Well worth the effort. Many thanks for all Beavers, Cubs and Scouts who took part. We would also like to thank our special guests, the worshipful mayor Sandie Forrest and her consort Roger Forest, Cllr Peter Lewis, Jonathon Morgan and Nicky Morgan. We would also like to thank Charnwood Borough Council for the loan of the litter pickers.

It’s now time to start collecting in the sponsor money. This will be used to help fund our new headquarters – Building our Future. We have a number of hoops to jump through before planning application approval (e.g. a geological survey – we’re on an old quarry site). Please give your sponsor money back to your leaders before the end of June.

The weekend at the end of half term saw Nanpantan Scout Group decended on Willesley Campsite over at Ashby-de-la-Zouch. Cubs and Scouts arrived on the Friday evening where they setup where they were going to sleep for the next 2 nights. That evening, the Cubs and Scouts played a wide game before watching Cars and then headed off to bed.

The next morning, breakfast was served before the activities started. Cubs and Scouts were split into two teams. One team spent an hour climbing while the other team had a go on the zip wire. The Scouts said it was an ‘epic adventure’.

At lunch time, the Beavers started to raid the campsite. After lunch and the Beavers settled in, the activities started again. This time they included the low zip wire and go karting.

Once we had finished, we headed off on a hike to Willesley Wood while the roast dinner cooked.

After dinner was a joint campfire with our new friends at 43rd Leicester who were also camping at Willesley. The campfire ended and the Beavers and Cubs went to bed while the Scouts had one more wide game before it was their turn to hit the hay.

The next morning, the Beavers were wide awake nice an early! Two hours before breakfast. We managed to entertain them until breakfast was served! After breakfast, it was time to pack the bags before the activities started again. This envolved games out on the field and venturing down the pot hole.

The camp ended with a quiz while the adults had a very quick meeting.

Nanpantan Scouts will be taking part in Scout Community Week, a national campaign for Scouts to get involved and bond with the local community whilst raising essential funds for local and national Scouting.

Scouts from all over the country will be taking part in community projects during the week 3th to the 9th June and Nanpantan Scouts will be out and about the local area doing a sponsored litter pick. The council will provide the litter picking equipment and our young people will go out and collect litter in designated areas around Loughborough.

Hopefully all our Scouts will now have received their sponsor forms. You can also sponsor us by texting NANS22 £5 to 70070. Texts will cost £5 plus your normal text messaging rate. Nanpantan Scouts will then receive £5 from you (even more if you gift aid it!). Pass this on to your friends, work colleagues etc. Money raised will go towards our new headquarters project, building our future, and to help make Scouting more inclusive and accessible for those in need.

Over May Bank Holiday weekend, we had over 40 young people from Nanpantan Scouts join other groups from across Loughborough to join in the District Camp. The site was open on Thursday evening to pitch tents where a number of parents helped put up the large marquee to eat in and patrol tents to sleep in.

Cubs and Scouts arrived on Friday evening and set up their sleeping gear in the tents. Having got themselves ready, Cubs and Scouts made their way to the campfire circle for the opening ceremony where they danced to Purple People Easter and Big Fish Little Fish, played Star Busters (loosely based on BlockBusters) and had an introduction to the camp from the organiser Daft Vader. Once the opening ceremony had finished, they all went on a small hike in order to make sure they all went to sleep that evening – didn’t really work though!

On Saturday, camp was in full swing where everyone got to do different activities, including Archery, Shooting, Bouncing (on a castle) and Backwoods Cooking. Meanwhile, on Saturday our Beavers arrived to join in the fun. They had a number of activities to do too, including crafts, light sabre training. The activities continued on throughout the day. In the evening, the Beavers had their very own campfire while the Cubs and Scouts watched a film and then had a disco.

After another night of little sleep (this time the Beavers woke up early), everyone made their way to the chapel for “Scouts Own” – a short reflective service. Activities then continued throughout the day again. After lunch, we said goodbye to the Beavers and normal chaos then resumed. In the evening, it was the Cubs and Scouts turn to have their campfire. Once it had finished, everyone took the opportunity to have an early night.

Monday morning, the weather was looking good that we could take down the tents dry. All Cubs and Scouts kit were packed in their bags before the activities started up again. While they were off on the activities, most of the tents came down and were packed away.

Lunch time came and the final tents came down, helped by the Cubs and Scouts before the closing ceremony started. A number of awards were giving out and a presentation made to Lorraine, one our Scouts, who designed the camp badge (who unfortunately couldn’t make camp but was collected on her behalf).

Everyone was exhausted by the end of the camp, but everyone was happy and really enjoyed themselves.

Many thanks to the leaders who helped out on camp, the parents that came and pitched/put down tents and most of all, the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts for making this camp great!

On the 19th April, Peter received his St Georges Award for the work he does at Nanpantan Scout Headquarters as the Group’s Quartermaster – someone who the parents and young people do not see working in the background. The awards recognise those people who go the extra mile to help the Scouts. Peter is often found tinkering and fixing things in the Stores making sure they are in good working order for our Scouts to use. Leaders often leave the stores in the mess but Peter puts up with this and tidies up leaving the stores easy accessible and ready to use. Our treasurer Jo, was also nominated to receive the award but was unable to attend the ceremony held in Barrow.

Over 78 people from across Leicestershire received County awards recognising the hard work that they do for Scouting.
